First renovation of the Greens on Maleny Golf Course

The nine greens were constructed between September 2014 and January 2015. Superintendent, Mick McCombe decided they needed a full renovation in September 2015 to reduce the thatch layer and aerate the soil.

Mick outsourced the actual coring process but otherwise the renovations were carried out by Mick, Greens Director Rob Bailo, apprentice Mark Kearney and a few volunteers. The Club borrowed the sand spreader from Beerwah Golf Club, dry-hired the bobcat, but otherwise used our own equipment to complete the job. The triflex mower was used to scarify each green using special replaceable heads for this particular task. (This step proved to be very time demanding and in future scarifying might also be outsourced as was the coring.)

Unfortunately no photographic record was kept of the scarifying or of the blowing of the thatching off the greens prior to a final mowing and coring. Nor were any photos taken of the hand raking of the cores to break them up and spread the sand – mainly back into the core holes.

The renovation process commenced on Sunday afternoon, 27 September 2015 and was completed on Friday afternoon, 2 October 2015. At the time of preparing these notes (Thursday 8 October 2015) the turf was rapidly covering all greens. The greens were playable from Friday 2 October which was an excellent outcome.
