Hinterland Golfer – November 2015

Club Shop

Work continues on enhancing our temporary operating premises, albeit at a less expeditious pace than previously envisaged. However, this has certainly not deterred increasing numbers of members and visitors alike from testing out the course, which is really looking fantastic and playing even better.

Patronage has also continued to trend upwards due to strong support from local sporting groups like the Witta Tennis Club, media interest in the club’s progress and the attraction of golf as a sport to augment high-school leadership and team-development programs.

Pop in, say hello and try out your course if you haven’t had a chance yet.

Golf Shop Volunteers

The Golf Shop remains short of volunteers to assist Manager Richard Owen in staffing the business seven days a week. Volunteer participation is vital as it underpins the club’s viability by helping to keep operating cost down.

We are looking for volunteers prepared to either open or close the shop on weekends as well as people prepared to fill shifts during the week. In particular we need to fill shifts on Monday and Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings. Ideally we also need standbys/pairs in case our regulars fall ill or go away on holidays. If interested please get in touch with Richard by phoning 5499 9960 or sending an email to shop@malenygolfclub.com.au

Annual General Meeting

agm-2015The club’s first Annual General Meeting following completion of Stage 1 of the golf course is being held on Thursday 12th November at 7.30pm at the Maleny RSL Hall for the “short year” from 1st November 2014 to 30th June 2015.

The Notice of Meeting, Management Committee Nomination Form, Agenda and Proxy Voting form along with the (draft) Minutes of the last AGM held on 25th March 2015 were circulated to members by email on the 9th of October. Members are urged to attend.

President Nominated for Sports Gong

Max Whitten

President Max Whitten

Maleny would not have a community golf course today had it not been for the drive, tenacity, determination and vision of our President Dr Max Whitten who refused to throw in the towel and wilt in the face of vociferous opposition when many others might well have

So it is with great pride that Maleny Golf Club advises members that Max has been selected as a finalist for the 2015 Sports Volunteer of the Year award to be announced at the Queensland Government’s 21st Sports Awards & Hall of Fame Presentation in Brisbane on 30 November.

A big thanks must go to Golf Queensland CEO Lindsay Ellis and staff for assisting with the nomination submission. Good luck Max, you are a worthy nominee.

Position vacant

In addition to the position of webmaster, referred to in the previous newsletter, the committee is also seeking expressions of interest from suitably experienced persons interested in taking on the role as the club’s book-keeper. The role would involve approximately 20 hours of work a month at present. Anyone interested should contact Treasurer David Killeen by email in the first instance: treasurer@malenygolfclub.com.au or telephone 0417 385 931

2016 Membership

MGC View of the 9th Fairway and 8th Green H2Our new membership year got underway on November 1, so members especially those who took up the previous three and four-month Green Fee Packages are reminded that they expired on October 31.

The response to the Club’s 2016 membership drive has been very pleasing due to the number of new members who have joined and the popularity of our Gold and Silver membership packages. A surprising number of social members who do not play golf regularly have also taken up our Bronze Offer as a means of demonstrating their continued support as the club embarks on planning work for development of Stage 2. The Committee thanks you for your ongoing support.

For more information on 2016 fees, online and down-loadable application forms and payment options please visit the membership page on the club’s website or click here

Competition Golf

Competition players are encouraged again to book their preferred tee times on-line via the Book Online button on the Fixtures page on the club’s website or click here in order to save administrative time at set-up. If you have forgotten your logon for this site or don’t have one contact Garry Mayer at handicaps.malenygolfclub.com.au

Busted shotgunPlease note that the Tuesday morning Competition will no longer be a shotgun start and tee off in future between 8:30am and 10am. Please use the online booking form to assist with organisation of playing groups. The lunchtime sausage sizzle will continue and serve early players as well as those who might want an energy boost before tackling the second nine!

The club’s Wednesday morning 9-hole competition for ladies continues to gain in popularity with players of all standards taking part and enjoying morning tea in the clubhouse together after their round. Last week we welcomed a visit by two ladies from Kilcoy. Beginners are welcome so why not get involved and tee off between 8:30am and 9:00am.

The Friday Chook Run Comp (yes you can win a frozen chook) has been attracting support and provides members with an opportunity to introduce friends and acquaintances to the club via a fun, low cost format. Bring a guest and tee off between 3pm and 3:30pm.

For more details on fixtures please consult the club website www.malenygolfclub.com.au.

Congratulations go to  Paul Viertel who carded a net 64 to win the October Monthly Medal sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals. Well done Paul who will compete against our other 2015 Monthly Medal winners this Saturday November 7 to win the Club’s annual Medal of Medals trophy to be presented at the Club’s upcoming Christmas Party and Presentation night on 18 November.

Course Update from the Superintendent Mick McCombe

Spreading amended sand 28 Sept 2015

Our greens have recovered well following the renovation work undertaken early in October and ongoing work will progressively deliver a smoother putting surface as time passes.

Our focus though, will now shift from the greens to construction of the ladies’ tees on the 7th hole. Time will also be spent with course designer Graham Papworth over coming weeks on the design of the second nine holes.

Club Christmas Party and Raffles

Old BailsTickets to the Maleny Golf Club Christmas party and presentation night being held at Maleny Manor on the evening of Wednesday 18 November have now sold out as numbers were limited to 100. However, those who have booked not paid need to do so ASAP to finalise their place.

Thanks must go to acclaimed local artist Michele Retschlag for donating a beautiful framed water-colour painting of the Armstrong Farm’s Old Cow Bails overlooking the 3rd hole as a prize for a club fund-raising raffle to be drawn on the night. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10 and will be available for sale on the night or beforehand at the course where the painting is on display.

The Club will also hold an Xmas Hamper Raffle on the night. Tickets will be $1 each or six for $5. Please contribute by dropping off something suitable to help fill the Hamper.

Captain’s Corner with John Pottage

Members are reminded that they must carry sand-buckets as all times, fill divots and those inadvertently left by others, rake bunkers and not to drive carts between bunkers and greens in keeping with the 10-metre rule.

anchoring cA number of changes to the Rules of Golf will come into effect on January 1 2016.

Competition players who use long or belly putters should particularly be aware that the Rules of Golf relating to their use will change from January 1 2016, so now is a good time to become familiar with those amendments and start working on necessary adjustments before they come into force.

Click here for a link to an explanation of all the changes.

Happy golfing come along and enjoy our course.
