Club Shop
Work continued on enhancing our temporary operating premises during February with the installation of a kitchen, water tank, pump and hot water system. A latticed return was also installed to hide our enlarged bank of bins from the street.
A big thanks goes out to John and Robin Hay for their generous donation of the kitchen and water tank and to John and Steve Lawrence for the professional installation work. Thanks also to Joyce Lee for paying for the hot water system, to Glen Cauley and his team for wiring it all up and to John Tytherleigh for the lattice-work. Fantastic effort!
Thanks also to all the volunteers, including our committee members, who ensured the Golf Shop ran smoothly while Richard was away on leave.
Pro-rata gold membership rate
A formula has been set for establishing our pro-rata Gold membership rate since the end of our first quarter of the membership year on January 31. A base rate of $115 has been set to cover administrative costs plus $30 per calendar month. The cost to upgrade is currently $355.
Silver members can also upgrade to Gold by paying $190 while Bronze members can do so at a cost of $311. Alternatively, Bronze members can upgrade to Silver by paying an additional $121.
Please note that there are still a lot of Silver and Bronze membership cards awaiting collection at the Golf Shop so why not pop in to the Golf Shop, pick up your membership card and try out the course if you haven’t yet had a chance.
Competition Golf
Congratulations go to Liz Mellish who shot a net 72 on Wednesday 25 February to win our Ladies Monthly Medal competition and the coveted glassware provided by our sponsor Maleny Property Rentals. Runner Up was Karen Heading (again) with a net 73.
The men’s Monthly Medal competition, also sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals, was contested in 2 Divisions on Saturday 27 February.
Despite the windy conditions which added a significant degree of difficulty, Garth Bailo receives accolades for shooting 74 off the stick which was good enough to set the club’s official course record. However, congratulations go to Division 1 winner Mike Finley who shot a net 62 – 7 shots clear of Runner Up Rob Bailo with a net 69. Tom Kennedy was the winner of Division 2 after shooting a net 67 – one shot ahead of Runner Up Rex Clark with a net 68.

Unredeemed Prize Vouchers
Competition golfers please check your golf bag, glove box or wallet to see if you have any unredeemed prize vouchers as there are currently quite a few which have been issued but not presented anywhere. If unwanted, please consider giving them back to the club as a donation.
Captain’s Corner with Robin Hay
Our golf course continues to improve with much nurturing from all the course team – so much so it has been decided to remove all preferred lie options from our local rule board. The Match Committee has also decided to establish an “Eagle’s Nest” – a pot of up to 20 balls to reward Eagle scores.
Next month the club will be holding a Captain versus President Team Match Play competition for both men and ladies to familiarise members with the match play format. The men’s event will be held on Saturday 16 April and the ladies event will be held on the following Wednesday 20 April. This should be a lot of fun with team members decided by a draw.
The following month the club will hold its inaugural club championships, which will be an honour board event. The ladies championship will be staged in one grade over two rounds on consecutive Wednesdays of May 11 and May 18 for the best gross score. The following weekend the men’s championship will be conducted in three grades over two rounds on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22 for the best gross score.
Please note these dates on your calendar so we have a good roll up. We hope to expand the format in future years to incorporate four rounds and a match play event to establish our ultimate Champions. Looking forward to seeing more of our members on the course soon – all welcome.
MGC hosts first Junior’s event
More than 50 budding golfers from as far away as Brisbane are expected to converge on Maleny Golf Club to test their skills when the club hosts its inaugural competition for juniors this coming Sunday morning (6 March).
The competition involving 3-hole, 6-hole and 9-hole formats to suit various age groups and abilities has been organised by the Glass House Mountains Zone Junior Golf Association (GHMZJGA) in conjunction with the Maleny Golf Club.

All are welcome so come along to watch these budding champions in action. The course will essentially be closed for social play until after lunch.
Surplus golf clubs
The golf club has a large number of golf clubs including sets for which we have no use or room to store. This Sunday (March 6) and next (March 13) members are invited to come and have a look at these clubs and make an offer (donation) for any clubs which are of interest. The remaining clubs will then be disposed of.
Course Update from the Superintendent Mick McCombe
The club has just added a new (second hand) rough mower to the fleet. The deck on this mower (pictured with Chris Pottinger at the helm) is able to hug the contours of the surface – eliminating scalping – so players should notice a marked difference in the presentation of the rough over time. The addition of upgraded equipment has cut the time taken to mow the course (excluding greens) from more than 30 hours a week to around 12 hours – significantly reducing the load on our team of volunteer operators.
Our greens have really come back well following the renovation work carried out at the beginning of last month and should soon be back to their playing best. The new practice green has also responded well to the excellent growing conditions and the practice bunker has been completed and will soon be ready for use. Our focus will now shift to construction of the Ladies 7th tee.
Position still vacant
Maleny Golf Cub is looking for a retired accountant or bookkeeper who would like to assist the club by taking on the role of bookkeeper as a volunteer, or alternatively in return for modest recompense.
This role requires a commitment of circa 20 hours a month (30mins to an hour per day) and involves:
Daily bank feed and processing in Xero (a/cs receivable, fixed asset register, general ledger, accounts payable)
Setting up invoices up for payment – approved by Treasurer and/or President
Running the payroll
Liaising with club manager on stock/supplier issues, voucher management and POS operation.
Quarterly BAS return
The hours are entirely flexible other than making sure the automated bank reconciliation is undertaken as regularly as possible. Previous experience required: bookkeeping; using computerised accounting packages such as MYOB, Quickbooks or Xero (the one we use); and payroll.
