Some of the greatest legends in Australian Golf are expected to take part in an inaugural PGA Legends Pro-Am event at Maleny Golf Club later this year and organisers are now calling for sponsors to get behind the event.

The tournament, being scheduled for the weekend 17-18 December on Maleny’s links-style 9-hole layout, should attract a large number of the Legends Players who will already be visiting the region to play in the Sunshine Coast Masters. (Down load more information here)

Former Major Championship winners Wayne Grady (US PGA), Ian Baker-Finch (The Open) along with Australian golfing legends such as Rodger Davis, Peter Fowler, Michael Harwood, Michael Clayton and Peter Senior all feature regularly on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour.

Designed by Graham Papworth, the award-winning Maleny course is maintained to an exceptionally high standard, earning Superintendent Mick McCombe the industry’s 2016 national award for excellence in golf course maintenance.

Maleny Golf Club President and 2015 Queensland Sports Volunteer of the Year Dr Max Whitten said the tournament was looking to attract prize money of around $15,000 from a range of sponsors and become a regular event on the annual Legends Tour.

“This tournament will provide sponsors with a unique and exciting promotional opportunity to market their businesses and help create a truly premier community event which should appeal to both professional and amateur players, as well as spectators,” Dr Whitten said.

Maleny Golf Club is working with experienced sports event manager Brett Holdway from BH Sports Management to plan and promote this inaugural E-Z-GO PGA Pro-Am and establish it as a signature annual event for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region.

Mr Holdway said the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour was a Professional golf circuit managed by the PGA of Australia for professional golfers aged 50 and over – the flagship event being the Australian PGA Seniors Championship played in November each year.

“Approximately 70 tournaments operate throughout Australia and New Zealand, with about AU$1 million in prize money on offer annually and I believe this proposed event in Maleny has great appeal and should be well supported,” Mr Holdway said.
