Hinterland Golfer April 2016
Club Shop
Visiting golfers can now be confident they have arrived at the right place to play their round thanks to the sublime signwriting skills of Graham Shoebridge. Graham kindly swapped his golf clubs for paint brushes one afternoon to adorn the temporary clubhouse with signage and logo. Thanks Graham, great job!
The gravel coverage at the entrance was also extended during the month and should help to keep things a little tidier inside early morning and during wet weather.
In coming weeks expect to see the addition of a covered patio from which to take in the course and enjoy a cool drink or a coffee in greater comfort.
Staffing at the golf shop remains a challenge at times, particularly when we have regulars away on holidays. Taking on a shift need not be a commitment of more than two hours plus some initial training. We are particularly looking for a couple of regulars who would be interested in shifts on Sunday morning from around 10:30am to 1pm.
So if you have any time available and are interested in getting involved please get in touch with Richard Owen by phoning 5494 999960 or emailing shop@malenygolfclub.com.au.
Competition Golf
The men’s Monthly Medal, sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals, was contested in 2 Divisions on Saturday 26 March. Congratulations go to Division 1 winner Richard Clayton who carded a net 70 to edge out runner up Mike Finley with a net 71 on a countback from Peter Gilbert. Tom Bertwistle was the winner of Division 2 after shooting a net 68 – one shot ahead of Runner Up Paul Viertel with a net 69.
However, the men’s competition did not generate the level of excitement experienced during the Ladies medal round the following Wednesday, March 30, when Penny Edwards holed her second shot on the Par 4 eighth to claim the newly established Eagle’s Nest! Perhaps Penny was inspired by Toni Bishop’s Eagle at Noosa/Tewantin the previous week but more about all that later!
Despite the Eagle, congratulations go to Seri Tytherleigh who shot a net 70 to edge out Penny also with a net 70 on a countback to win the Ladies Monthly Medal and coveted glassware also provided by our sponsor Maleny Property Rentals.
Hans scores MGC’s first ace
On most week days Hans van Sambeeck (pictured) heads out at first light for a quick 9 holes before breakfast – often on his own. However, on Tuesday morning last week Hans was accompanied by good friend and keen golfer Bob Hawkins.
After teeing off into the early morning sun on the 173 metre Par 3 Third hole the duo could not locate Hans’ golf ball despite being confident that it should have made the green or stopped just short.
Hans began to despair when his ball could not be found. “We then decided to check the hole just in case and incredibly there it was lying in the bottom of the cup,” Hans beamed when he arrived back at the golf shop to proudly claim the club’s first hole-in-one on the course proper.
Unfortunately his rare golfing feat was not achieved during a competition in order to warrant an entry on the club’s honour boards. However, Hans has the scorecard signed by his playing partner to serve as a proud reminder and conversation piece for many years to come. Well done from us all Hans!
Captain’s Corner with Robin Hay
We’ve has a really good month for golf with some very exciting happenings and good scores recorded as the golf course continues to improve weekly.
Congratulations again to David Hobbs who eagled the 4th!
On March 21 four of our ladies (Vice Captain Marg Trigger, Toni Bishop, Mo Lawrence and Alison Behncken) travelled to Noosa Golf Club to take part in a District Senior Women’s event and the group did Maleny proud.
Toni stunned fellow players as her third shot on the Par 5 fourth hole found the bottom of the cup for an Eagle and 5 points! Marg Trigger was runner up on the day with 32 points on a countback from Alison Behncken also on 32 points and Toni Bishop with 31 points.
Seri Tytherleigh and I won the invitation day last week at Caloundra which attracted a field of 156 players. So Maleny really seems to be developing as a good training ground for playing away games. We hope to have more representatives playing at other local courses in time.
Don’t forget the club will be holding our Captain vs President Team Match Play competition for both men (Saturday April 16) and ladies (Wednesday April 20) to familiarise members with the match play format.
Also please put Thursday 21 April in your diaries as this will be a Memorial Day for John Cundill and Terry Lee. It will be a shotgun start at 1pm, playing a 9-hole Ambrose with a sausage sizzle to follow.
It is advisable to book as there hopefully will be a large field to pay respects to these two great supporters of our club. An email will be sent to all members shortly.
You may have recently noticed that there are a couple of changes to marked areas on the course. Along the left hand side of the 9th fairway the long grass has been marked as Out of Bounds.
This area was not allowed to be mown and was a constant lost ball area. Now if your ball goes there it is a reload shot from where the original shot was played – not from where the ball crossed the OB line.
There are now definite Hazard pegs and Out of Bound markers along the left hand side of the 4th, at the area at the bottom of the path near the creek (pictured). If you think your ball has gone there from the tee and could be OB please play a provisional ball as it is very hard and time-consuming to climb back up to the tee if the ball cannot be found.
Good golfing everyone and enjoy the fantastic facility we have here – Robin and the Match Team.
Course Update from the Superintendent Mick McCombe
During the next couple of weeks we will be turfing the new Ladies Tee on the 7th hole after completing the pathway and rock wall (pictured) next to the Ladies Tee on the 9th.
Players will also note that our team of volunteers has done a lot of great work tidying up the treed areas to the right of the 8th fairway and next to the 9th green and that the sheds have also been removed from near the 8th green.
The greens will also be top dressed during the month so players may encounter some sand which will be used to help level out the putting surfaces. The pace of the greens should also start to quicken as we approach winter.
Golfers are asked to please take care to rake bunkers properly after playing out and repair their pitch marks and those of others on the greens which are now becoming more receptive.
