Hinterland Golfer – February 2016
Club Shop
Work continued on enhancing our temporary operating premises during January with the painting of the barge-board between the containers and the roof (ready for signage) and installation of the rear guttering and capping on the right hand side of the roof. A big thanks again to Paul Viertel for the roof and gutter work and to Bob Leach and Ralph Ding (pictured at right) for working their paint roller magic.
Our Schweppes refrigerator has arrived and is now filled with a wider range of beverages than we were able to stock previously in the little fridge which has served us all so well over the past few years. This smaller unit will migrate into the kitchenette to soon be constructed at the back of the second container.
Encouragingly new Golf Shop Volunteers continue to join our ranks, but there are still slots to fill including regulars on Saturday mornings from 8:30am until 10:30am and 10:30am to 12:30pm. Apart from individual shifts we also still need additional standbys in case our regulars fall ill or go away on holidays. If interested please phone Richard on 5499 9960 or send an email to shop@malenygolfclub.com.au (Note Richard will be away from 6-20th of February so please contact Penny Edwards on 5494 3175 or pbe@aap.net.au in his absence).
A new Golf Shop Volunteers subcommittee has also been established and is chaired by Management Committee Member Tom Bertwistle. Eve Beaman is also on this sub-committee as a representative for volunteers.
Members please note that there are still a lot of Silver and Bronze membership cards awaiting collection at the Golf Shop.
Promotional Activities
During January the club took part in two promotional events – the Hinterland Summer Wedding Showcase 2016 on 10 & 11 of January (at one of six participating venues Weddings at Tiffany’s) and the Sporting and Services Club Expo held at the Maleny Showgrounds on Australia Day.
Thanks to Jeff Cornfoot and Michele Retschlag and Anne Devane (pictured at left) for getting involved in these events and helping to staff our exhibits. MGC’s exhibit was well received at both venues and the club captured useful business and membership leads as a result of our promotional efforts.
Competition Golf
Fixtures time sheets are available on the website for February and March. To avoid disappointment competition players are encouraged to book their preferred tee times and reserve carts on-line via the Book Online button on the club website’s Fixtures page or click here. If you have forgotten your logon for this site or don’t have one contact Garry Mayer at handicaps.malenygolfclub.com.au.
Club representative shirts
Members who ordered logoed representative men’s and ladies club shirts can now pick them up from the Golf Shop. The discounted member price (for both men’s and ladies) short sleeve polos is $50 and $55 for the plain white long sleeve option.
Course Update from the Superintendent Mick McCombe
A big thanks to the team of volunteers who assisted with the renovation work on our greens which got underway this week. This is a necessary evil in order to get the best out of these greens which should be starting to get back to their best by the end of the month. The new practice green is also responding well and similarly to the conditions and should be in use by the end of the month. Once the renovation work on the greens has been completed our focus will shift to construction of the bunker by the new practice green and then Ladies 7th tee.
Our new fairway mower (pictured right with Mick at the helm) has been performing well after its recent overhaul and the odd adjustment here and there, so players should start to notice a continued improvement on the fairways over time.
Captain’s Corner with Robin Hay
Congratulations go to Seri Tytherleigh who shot a net 76 on Wednesday 27 January to become the inaugural winner of our Ladies Monthly Medal competition introduced this year and sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals. Runner Up was Karen Heading with a net 77 on a countback from Penny Edwards also with a net 77. Seri (centre) is pictured below being presented with her trophy by MPR principals Isabel Bruderlin (left) and Karen Worcester. Many thanks Isabel and Karen.
The men’s Monthly Medal competition, also sponsored by Maleny Property Rentals, was contested in 2 Divisions on Saturday 30 January. Congratulations go to Division 1 winner Peter Gilbert who shot a net 69 to edge out Runner Up Richard Owen with a net 70. Dennis Brown was the winner of Division 2 after shooting a net 65 a couple of shots ahead of Runner Up Perry Garcia with a net 67.
Laughter is the Best Medicine

A. Your fourth putt.
Q: You made a 12 on the par-3 third hole? How in the world did you manage that?
A: I chipped in from the fringe!
If you think it’s hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong ball on a golf course.
