Club Shop
It was very pleasing to see such a good roll up to our Volunteers Morning Tea (pictured) held on the new paved terrace and deck on the 29th of August. The event was held to show appreciation for all the various work performed by our volunteers.
The club would also like to thank Rod Waldron and the Chook-Run Committee and other individual members for donating funds to help cover the cost of materials used to construct the deck extension which all agree provides a fantastic new vantage point from which to take in a panoramic view of the course.
The number of vacant shifts on the weekly golf shop roster has been steadily diminishing. However, there is always someone going off on holidays, so if you have some spare time on your hands and want to lend a hand why not consider volunteering to work in the golf shop?
Taking on a shift need not be a commitment of more than two hours plus some initial training. If interested in getting involved please get in touch with Richard Owen by phoning 5499 9960 or emailing shop@malenygolfclub.com.au.
Lessons & Professional Advice
Don’t forget PGA professional Don Portway works as a volunteer in the Golf Shop every Tuesday morning from 8am to 12:30pm when he is available to provide professional advice on all aspects of your golf game and equipment. For more information CLICK HERE.
Social Media
Recent changes to the Maleny Golf Club website include the addition of Social Media Portals such as Facebook, You Tube and Trip Advisor. The You Tube playlist contains individual flyovers of the nine holes thanks to the spectacular complimentary footage provided by Owen Foley who flew the course with his drone earlier in the year.
These flyovers are also linked to the images displayed on the Gallery Page of the website.

New Competition Prize Voucher Sponsors & Conditions
Due to the quantum value of un-redeemed Competition Prize Vouchers now in circulation the Management Committee has decided to reduce the current six-month redemption time limit from the date of issue to two months.
While the redemption period for prize vouchers has been reduced to two months the number of local business where they will be accepted has been expanded to include Range Hardware & Hire, Jonesy’s Top of the Range Meats and Concept IT at the Riverside Centre, and Maleny Harvest fresh fruit and vegetable opposite the IGA. Please show your thanks by supporting these local businesses.
Please also remember to support our new Score Card sponsors Spicers Tamarind, Ben Messina and Brouhaha Brewery.
Ladies Let’s Golf
The free Ladies Let’s Golf initiative attracted 15 participants last month and 11 of those attendees subsequently signed on to participate in one of two Level 1 clinics being run this month by PGA professional Don Portway on Friday’s and Sundays.
The club plans to hold a similar promotion every quarter with the next series of clinics to be held later in the year.
Thanks to both Don and Virginia Irwin from Golf Queensland for helping to make this initiative such a great success.
Junior Golf
Following the success of the club’s inaugural junior tournament on March 6, Maleny Golf Club will be hosting another Glass House Mountains Zone Junior Golf Association event this Sunday 11 September during which time social play be suspended. About 70 competitors are expected to take part in the event involving 18-hole, 9-hole, 6-hole and 3-hole formats. This event will impact on Social Golf as tee times will be unavailable between 8:00am and 2:00pm.
Captain’s Corner with Robin Hay
Our competition fields are on the up which is fantastic to see so please welcome and encourage any new players appearing in our midst. Great to see our Ladies Let’s Golf clinics progressing so well with many of those who attended our free clinic continuing on to Level One.
On Monday 5 September seven of our members played in a Seniors’ Competition at Kilcoy and our ladies scooped the pool! Congratulations to Seri Tytherleigh who won the Ladies with 41 points and to Anne Devane who was runner up with 36 points. Margaret Trigger and Toni Bishop also featured in the rundown with 34 points each, and Margaret also won Nearest the Pin on the 9/18th.
The Match Committee recently surveyed competition players to gauge support for earlier starting times during summer and we received a resounding “yes” to starts from 7:30am to commence in October. The Thursday competition is to also to be phased out due to lack of participants while the Friday Chook Run is gaining in popularity. We also now have the Sunday competition up and running twice a month to help fill the gap. Good golfing everyone – see you out on our great course soon.
Course Update – Superintendent Mick McCombe
With the summer growing season rapidly approaching we have been top-dressing the tees and spreading sand around the greens aprons to smooth out the playing surfaces and improve the consistency of greenside lies.
So please be patient if you happen to cop a horror bounce around the greens or your ball lands in a pocket of sand and take relief as per Rule 25-1 (Abnormal Ground Condition) if required.
On another note, after playing out of a bunker try using the back of the rake to smooth the sand after raking to help improve bunker lies for those playing behind you. Here is a link to a video clip which also shows the correct way to rake a bunker.
Finally, we need more rags for the workshop so if anyone has any suitable rags they want to donate please bring them in and drop them off at the Golf Shop. Thanks in advance, Mick.
