Maleny Golf Club successfully staged its first officially sanctioned Glasshouse Mountains Zone Seniors event on Monday 13 June 2016 – less than 12 months after the course opened to the public.

Despite the looming threat of rain which understandably prompted a flurry of withdrawals from the fray, a field of 47 players was still in position for a Shotgun Start when the hooter sounded at 9am to get the action underway.

The heavens opened a couple of times but no one was deterred from completing their round and in due course everyone converged on the clubhouse for a BBQ burger or hotdog while the scorecards were checked to ascertain the winners.

Congratulations went to Roger Bonhomme (Beerwah) with 37 points who won Division 1 and a Maleny club shirt and Runner Up Michael Rubie (Wantima) who won a Maleny club cap with 34 points on a count back.

Maleny club identity Joe Walters took out Division 2 honours and a Maleny club shirt with 33 points on a count back from Runner Up Phil Moxham (Pacific Harbour) also on 33 points which earned him a Maleny club cap.

Anne Devane (Maleny) took out Ladies’ honours on 34 points, earning her a pair of scented soy candles handcrafted by Isabel Bruderlin with fellow Maleny member Toni Bishop the Runner Up on 31 points on a count back, earning her a designer visor.

In the mens’ Division 1 (HC 1-16) Robin Hewitt (Pine Rivers) won Nearest the Pin on the 5th and Bill Philp (Caboolture) won it second time around on 14th. In Division 2 (HC 17-36) Scott Alexander (Maleny) won Nearest the Pin on the 5th and Phillip Moxham (Pacific Harbour) won it on the 14th.

Toni Bishop (Maleny) won the Ladies 2nd Shot Nearest the Pin on the 3rd and Alisa Lauchlan (Bribie Island) won it on the 12th.

Richard Owen won the first draw of the raffle with Gerald Loye (editor thinks) taking second pick of a bottle of Bundy Rum.

The day was a great success in spite of some inclement weather and there has been some talk about doing it all again at Maleny later this year on Monday 26 September so stay tuned for more details.

Many thanks to Zone Seniors President Greg Paul and Secretary/Treasurer Ian Good for all their assistant, wise advice and encouragement; Mick McCombe and the grounds crew for the impeccable presentation of the course; to Maleny Vice Captain Margaret Trigger for her organisational skills under pressure in managing the event for Maleny; to Ralph Ding for organising the BBQ and courtesy shuttle service for walkers caught short of breath after leaving the 9th; to Karen Heading and Penny Edwards for great assistance wherever required; and to Paul Stratford, Keith Doonan, Richard Clayton, Jan Johnston, Ian Busk and Dennis Hickey for making their carts available to players on the day.
